mr. gillespie discussed how the confederate statue wasn't needed in 1908 to intimidate the black population, as there had been a lynching, with barbed wire, in leesburg in 1902.
while not necessary for intimidation, it certainly served as a daily reminder that the south had retaken power:-\
perhaps if this despicable celebration of the confederacy is not taken down, it should festooned with a noose dangling from the musket, with a sign reading:
"this is what happens
when traitors aren't hanged"
